COWS HAVE FOUR STOMACHS

COWS HAVE FOUR STOMACHS

Did you know that cows have four stomachs? It’s true! Cows are special animals that have four compartments in their stomachs. This is why cows are able to eat food, then digest it later.

Cows have four sections in their stomachs. The first part is called the rumen, which is the largest compartment. This is where the cow stores food and it helps with digestion. The second part is the reticulum which helps break down food, the third part is the omasum which filters out liquid and the fourth part is the abomasum which helps with digestion. All four of these parts work together to help cows digest their food. First, the cows chew their food which is called cud. This cud is then stored in the rumen. The reticulum helps break down the food particles and the omasum filters out the liquid. Finally, the abomasum helps with digestion and absorption of nutrients.

Cows have been around for centuries, but it’s only in the last few years that we’ve learned more about their digestion. So the next time you see a cow, remember that they have four stomachs and are able to digest their food in a very special way.
