HOW MANY SPECIES OF FISH ARE THERE IN THE WORLD?
Did you know that there are over 10,000 different kinds of fish in the world? That’s right! From big sharks to tiny minnows, fish come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes.
Fish live in oceans, rivers, lakes and even ponds. They can be found in tropical areas and even in cold places like the Arctic. Some fish, like salmon, even travel thousands of miles to spawn. Fish come in all different colors, too. From bright blues to deep reds, they can be quite a sight to behold. Some fish, like anglerfish, even use light to lure their prey. Some fish can live in the tiniest of places. For example, gobies are so small that they can hide in between coral and rocks. This helps them stay safe from predators.
Not all fish swim. Some, like the lungfish, have special organs that allow them to breathe air from the surface. This lets them live in shallow pools or even on land. Fish are an important part of the food chain. They provide food for many other animals, including birds and humans. We also use fish for sport fishing and scientific research.
