WHY IS THE SKY BLUE?
WHY IS THE SKY BLUE?
Are you ever outside, looking up at the sky and wondering why it is blue? That’s a great question! It’s actually a scientific phenomenon that has been studied by scientists for centuries. The sky is blue because of the way sunlight interacts with the atmosphere. When sunlight enters the atmosphere, it is scattered in all directions by molecules of nitrogen and oxygen. This process is called Rayleigh scattering, and it is the same reason why sunsets are red and orange.
The blue color of the sky is actually a combination of all the colors of the rainbow. White light from the sun is made up of all the colors of the rainbow, but when it enters the atmosphere, the blue light scatters more than other colors, making the sky appear blue.
The blueness of the sky can also vary depending on the weather. On a hazy day, for example, the blue sky can appear milky white. This is because the tiny particles in the air, like dust and smoke, are scattering the light in all directions.
So now the next time you look up at the sky, you’ll know why it is blue!
